Original Cowichan Cutting Board®
Re-oiling
helps protect and keeps the color and figure in the wood vivid. You
may want to refinish your board in the future. We recommend that you
use an orbital sander with 100 grit first. Then 150 grit to remove deep
cut marks and finally 220 grit to finish. Lastly re-oil with 100% Pure
Tung Oil.
Your Figured Maple
Board or Utensil has been treated with 100% Pure Tung
Oil which gives it a dry, food safe finish and brings up the beautiful
figure and color of the wood and should last a year with routine washing.
Care Instructions
We recommend hand
washing with soap and water, no soaking, no dishwashers and
only soft scrubbers when needed. Lemon juice or a solution of 10% bleach
will remove any odors.
An oil of any kind
will remove the glue from our price tag. Always wash your board or tool
before the first use. They may fur up a bit. A soft rubbing with
220 grit sandpaper or finer will take care of that. No need to re-oil at
this time. Salad bowl wax is good for in between oiling.
It is very important
to allow the board or tool to air dry.
After towel drying stand the board on edge to allow for even drying and
help in preventing any warping. Avoid leaving the board on a damp surface
or in direct sunlight for any length of time.
Our boards are air
dried to maintain cell structure which is necessary for creating the resonance
for musical instruments such as guitars, violins, harps, drums etc. Air
drying makes the wood very stable. Furniture makers love our wood for that
reason and, of course, for its beauty.
Accidents do happen
though and we guarantee our wood not to split. If they cup or warp you can
try flattening them. Wash the board, then towel dry. Place the board with
the hump up and a weight on it and allowing it to dry in that position.
